The Early Career Hydrogeologists’ Network

The Early Career Hydrogeologists’ Network (ECHN) of the International Association of Hydrogeologists aims to support hydrogeologists at the start of their professional careers and to promote their involvement in IAH affairs. The professional background of its members ranges from academic/scientific to governmental and industrial.

Our goals

One of the main goals of IAH is to improve the understanding of groundwater issues and to support its better management. To maintain and develop this knowledge and understanding through time, those at the start of their professional careers are encouraged to become involved into IAH affairs as early as possible. A well established and supported international network of early career hydrogeologists is one of the keystones for a successful and forward-looking IAH.

The Early Career Hydrogeologists’ Network activities at the 43rd IAH Congress

The ECHN team liaises with IAH’s congress and meeting organisers, endeavouring to provide a range of opportunities specifically for those in the early stages of their hydrogeology careers. These include pre-congress/meeting short courses, awards for best presentations and posters, affordable accommodation and organizing social events for networking.

ECHN event on Monday – 15:10-16:30 - A day in the life of hydrogeologist

It is very important to build a bridge and create connections between young (ECHN members) and senior/experienced hydrogeologists, and what better opportunity to do this than the 60 th IAH birthday in Montpellier, 2016?! The ECHN will organize a special session during which few experts will share  their stories about being a hydrogeologist.

During this session, senior hydrogeologists will discuss topics along the lines of what made them want to become a hydrogeologist, and better yet what makes them continue to want to be a hydrogeologist, also giving some precious tips for career development.  Perhaps hydrogeology was not their initial career choice, therefore how the expert become a hydrogeologist can also be discussed. Everyday encounters, struggles and successes the experts experiences during a typical day of being a hydrogeologist can also be discussed.

The final part of the session will include a time for questions during which the ECHN members and the audience can ask about more specific topics which may not have been covered during the experts’ talks.

Call for the student competition on Regional groundwater flow
